Reading to Eradicate the School-To-Prison Pipeline: And How This Connects to STEAM Education.

Updated: Jan 1

Hello, everyone,

We all know about the benefits of exposing our children to literature and writing at a young age (even as young as six months old). It increases vocabulary, enhances imagination, stimulates metacognition, improves memory and focus, and strengthens writing skills, to mention a few benefits.

In STEM, excellent reading and writing skills are essential because of the nature of what we do in terms of data generation, analysis, and communication. Knowing what to do with data or information requires a good understanding of the information, which may require retrieving additional essential information through a literature search or experimentation to try to understand a phenomenon, which may lead to the further generation of more information to read and communicate through writing. Thus, the significance of educators in reading/writing, language, and literature.

Best practices Peaches and Sourcream Peaches and Sourcream is implementing to minimize the impact of the pandemic on children's reading and writing skills:

Although, there is no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted many of our children's gains in reading and writing before the pandemic. A few days ago, I had the pleasure to talk with Robin Muldor-Engram, the founder of Peaches and Sourcream Peaches and Sourcream - Mentoring/Tutoring, Literacy Intervention program, about their Reading to Eradicate the School-To-Prison Pipeline and summer reading program.

The Peaches and Sourcream summer reading program incentivized children to read and write in a four-week summer project to close the achievement gap and accelerate reading and writing for kindergarten through 6th grade. The mission statement is "spreading the joy of reading to eradicate the School-To-Prison Pipeline." And their summer theme is "It Pays to Read." Below is a link to their most recent blog celebrating the end of summer reading 2022.

Raise the roof! It does pay to read!
