How Do You Stay Relevant While Searching for a Job As Educators?

If you are looking for a job, hang in. Something will open.

However, because it is competitive out there, remember, to stay relevant, you must continue to learn, stay current, and engage people in your industry. Also, while you are off from work, this is the best time to start doing some reflection. Take inventory of your skill sets and how others are applying similar skill sets in your industry. Think about how these skill sets could be better used?!

While you are looking for your next opportunity, use this time to stay current on the best practices and think about innovative ways of doing things in your industry. This is what I consider forward-thinking, looking in without pressure. You are in the best seat to see some things so clearly. Think about it. You have heard about the phrase, "looking in hindsight," or for football lovers, why do you think everyone in the stadium loves to give their opinion on how a quarterback should have run a play, even though they may be wrong sometimes? Well, it is because the spectators are in a great vantage point to see what a quarterback could not see on the field before or after he makes a foul play.

Although, when you are a quarterback, unless you are Russell Wilson (I still don't understand why they trade him to the Denver Broncos), sometimes the quarterback is disconnected from where his players are on the field. That sense of disconnection causes the quarterback to make the wrong play. But the spectators are at a vantage point to see because they are in a better position looking in. So are you, right now! That is where you are at this point.

All I am saying is, be encouraged. Right now, you are in a good position looking in without pressure. Use this time to regroup. While you are regrouping, create some content for your industry. People new to your industry may find it helpful along the way. What do you have to lose?

This is something I have seen and learned from gen z. Some of them are creating their content and even making money from it. Why not you? What do you have to lose than staying engaged and current? For now, consider starting writing and sharing your experience about best practices to make things better in your industry. This could help others, and allow you to stay engaged, learn from others in your industry, and continue to make some contribution to the industry you love.

Finally, in a world where young people are creating their content, create some content on how to apply innovation or creativity to your industry. Do something fun and creative and make it easy for employers to find you while you wait for the perfect opportunity.

Again, what do you have to lose? This could be a value-added proposition for your industry. Or, at the least, this could be another way to keep sharpening your skills, so it doesn't become dull. Eventually, someone will notice your skill sets and where and how your skills fit in their organization.

Although this is not a prescription, it is a thought that is coming from a place of care. Please stay encouraged and share the good news when you land the next opportunity.

For those a job, please share other ideas that may help educators and job searchers.

Thank you.
