Getting to Know You!? Why Do Teachers Start With This Icebreaker Activity?

Why do teachers start with an icebreaker, "Getting to Know You," as an engagement and introduction exercise at the beginning of terms or semesters?

It is an important opportunity for good educators to get to know their students by their names, hobbies, and career aspirations. Instead of the students feeling like a number, the gesture communicates care and empathy.

Another reason a good teacher collects such data is that a good educator collects such data to design an assessment relevant to their students. When planning and designing assessments appropriate and connected to students' culture and lives, then the assessment would be relevant, compelling, and engaging to the student.

What other reason do you think begins with this icebreaker exercise? Better yet, what other reason would you recommend for educators to use this icebreaker activity? I love to hear from parents who are essential to collaboration and communication in education.
